2nd grade

The barista certification level 2 is divided into a written test and a practical test. There are no restrictions on eligibility. The written test consists of 50 questions in a 4-choice multiple-choice format, and the practical test is divided into skill evaluation and sensory evaluation, and 15 minutes of preparation and demonstration time are given.

 

The application fee is KRW 33,000 for writing and KRW 55,000 for practical examination.

 

Level 2 exam exemption
① Special admission for majors: Those who have completed at least 9 credits of coffee courses as a university major, those who have completed the barista academy, and WCCK judges

 

② Desired Special Admission: Foreigners/disabled people who have completed 6 credits or more of coffee subjects at university educational institutions certified by the association, foreigners/disabled people who have completed 54 hours or more of education at educational institutions certified by the association

 

1st grade

The barista certification level 1 is divided into a written test and a practical test. Those who have obtained a level 2 barista certification are eligible to take the level 1 test.

 

The written test consists of 50 questions in a 4-choice multiple-choice format, and the practical test is divided into skill evaluation and sensory evaluation, and 15 minutes of preparation and demonstration time are given. The application fee is KRW 44,000 for writing and KRW 99,000 for practical examination.

 

Level 1 Practical Test
① Preparation evaluation: After selecting one of the provided grinders, the test taker sets the appropriate grinding degree for the provided beans and checks the flavor.

 

② Espresso evaluation: After completing 4 cups of espresso with the selected beans, serve them, and accurately explain the flavor of the espresso they extracted.

③ Evaluation of cappuccino: As a starting point for latte art, 2 cups of the same heart and 2 cups of 3-tiered tulips are provided with the same pattern.

Class 1 exam exemption
① Exemption from written test: Those who have obtained barista license level 2 without taking the written test, acquired 15 or more credits in coffee courses at universities and educational institutions certified by the association, and have averaged 70 or more points in the semester, barista academy graduates, WCCK judges

 

② Practical test exemption: Those who pass the written test, no test for practical test, and winners of the WBC national team selection contest organized by the association (1st to 6th place)

 

Criteria for successful applicants
Barista certification is determined by those who score 30 points or more out of 50 points in the written test for both Level 1 and 2, and those who score 60 points or more out of 100 points in the practical test.

 

 

Other barista qualifications
The barista certification level 1 and 2, which we looked at earlier, are certifications supervised by the Korea Coffee Association. Other domestic and international qualifications are as follows.

 

① Korea Barista Qualification Association: Similar to the International Barista Qualification. It is divided into a written test and a practical test, and there are Coffee Manufacturing Master Level 1~2, Coffee Roasting Master, Latte Art Master Level 1~2, Brewing Master, and Sensory Master.

 

② SCA: It is an international certification used in more than 75 countries and is the most representative barista certification. The level consists of 3 stages.

 

③ GCS: It is a recently popular international certification and consists of 3 levels.

 

④ IBS: You can learn extraction time, grinding degree control, and coffee storage techniques in the Italian way.

 

Barista Classification
People who make coffee are collectively called baristas, but baristas are generally divided into espresso baristas, hand-drip baristas, coffee roasters, and cuppers.

 

Espresso Barista: A person who makes espresso or espresso-based coffee using a coffee machine.
Hand drip barista: A person who makes coffee by extracting coffee using the hand drip method
Coffee Roaster: A person who roasts green coffee beans and turns them into beans. Nowadays, the line between barista and coffee roaster is blurred.
Cupper: A coffee taster who distinguishes the taste and aroma of coffee

 

Use of barista license
Coffee is the most popular beverage that is called the national favorite food. Accordingly, as the demand for coffee continues to increase, the employment of baristas is also increasing. You can go to a coffee shop or a hotel or restaurant.

 

The average barista salary is about 27 million won, with the top 25% earning 33.5 million won and the bottom 25% earning 24 million won.
