To mark the opening of the KBO professional baseball season, TVING begins broadcasting in earnest.
TVING issued a press release on the 21st and announced that it will broadcast all 2024 professional baseball games live, starting with the opening game on the 23rd. On the 23rd, the games ‘Hanwha Eagles vs. LG Twins’, ‘Lotte Giants vs. SSG Landers’, ‘Doosan Bears vs. NC Dinos’, ‘Samsung Lions vs. KT Wiz’, and ‘Kiwoom Heroes vs. KIA Tigers’ will be broadcast.
TVing offers an advertising rate product for 100 won for the first month only to users who subscribe to TVing for the first time by April 30th. In addition to broadcasting, TVING has prepared a ‘KBO League Special Hall’ where you can check the entire game lineup, game power, scoring record, and highlight video. A ‘collection of scoring scenes’ function has been added to the time machine function that allows you to replay the broadcast.
With Tving being the first to secure online broadcasting rights, online professional baseball broadcasting, previously provided for free by Naver and others, became ‘paid’ for the first time. Meanwhile, issues such as frequent subtitle errors, slow updates, inconvenient highlight UI, lack of support for player records, and blocking of team videos and secondary processing arose during TVING’s broadcast of exhibition games, causing controversy. In particular, in the replay video, absurd subtitles appeared one after another, such as ‘3rd base saved (SAVE)’, ‘Peraza hits 3rd base and home runs’, and ‘22nd batter Chae Eun-seong’.
As the controversy arose, it was reported that Tving canceled its contract with CJ OliveNetworks, which was in charge of producing highlight videos, and replaced the company. At a press conference on the 12th, TVing CEO Choi Joo-hee promised to improve the service, saying, “I painfully accept the criticism that it is worse than free broadcasting.”
A TVING official told Media Today, “We are doing our best to provide a stable and satisfying service for baseball fans.”
Although TVING has paid for live video broadcasting, it plans to provide △replay (VOD) △regular channels for 10 teams △real-time text broadcasting △main scene highlights and clip videos for free.
