If you sell your car as a used car, export it, or cancel it due to scrap, you can receive a refund for the car insurance premium you have signed up for and the car tax you have already paid. Car tax and car insurance are refunded on a pro-rata basis for the remaining period excluding the number of days of use.
Automobile tax is paid twice over a certain period of time during the year, in the first and second installments, and there is a discount system for annual payment, so you can pay it all at once. Each car insurance period is different, but it is usually purchased on a yearly basis. So, if you sell your car in the middle of the period you have already paid or signed up for, you will receive a refund.
For example, if you sell a car in June, car tax from the day after the sale date until December will be prorated and refunded, and insurance premiums will be refunded prorated for the insurance premium up to the end date. So, let’s find out how you can get a refund for each.
A separate application for automobile tax is not required, and a refund notice will be mailed to the vehicle registration address within one month after sale. And the refund will be deposited into the refund account you entered at the time of paying the car tax. It takes approximately 2 months to receive a refund.
However, if you want to receive a refund faster or if you do not receive a refund by mail, you can also receive a refund through a separate application. There are two main ways: apply by phone to the tax department of your district office or apply online through the Witax website.
To apply by phone, first call the tax department at the city hall or district office. Notify that you are selling the car and provide the car owner’s name, license plate number, and account number for the car tax refund. Then, the tax department staff will check your vehicle number and account number and process it within 7 days.

You can also apply online through the Witax website or app. After logging in to WiTax, click on local tax among refund inquiries and applications in the refund application menu, click on the amount eligible for refund, enter refund account information, and click apply to complete the application.
If you sell your car, you will need a completed car registration certificate or a transfer certificate to receive an insurance premium refund. And, if the cancellation has been carried out due to export or scrapping of the car, you can prepare one of the following: a certificate of car cancellation registration, a certificate of receipt of the scrapped car, or a car registration book instead of the car registration certificate.
If you signed up through an insurance company employee, you can contact the insurance company employee to receive guidance and submit the necessary documents to receive a refund. If you signed up directly, you can call the insurance company’s customer center and request cancellation of insurance due to car sale. Submit the documents according to the instructions of the person in charge, and after verification by the insurance company, the refund will be deposited to the account number you registered.
If you sign up for a mileage special contract, you may receive an additional refund. If you submit a photo of the license plate and instrument panel at the time of sale and meet the refund conditions, mileage special settlement is possible.
There are many ways to sell your car, but the process is different depending on how you sell it, and the time it takes varies. In the case of used car export, it is canceled on the same day of receipt, or the next business day if it is later, so one way to get a little more refund by organizing it quickly through transfer may be.
Also, just because the process of selling or scrapping your car is over, it doesn’t mean it’s completely over. This is because there may still be car tax and insurance premiums already paid for that car. If you can get a refund, make sure to get it and get the refund until the end!
