The basic pension is a basic old-age pension paid to people over the age of 65, and you can think of it as a kind of old-age allowance.
If you are a citizen of the Republic of Korea, it is a social allowance that is provided based on the taxes you have paid so far.
The basic pension is available to Korean nationals over the age of 65 whose household’s recognized income meets the standard.
Here, the recognized amount of income is earned income, business income, financial income, real estate, etc.
Conditions for supply and demand
– Korean nationals aged 65 or older – Residing in Korea – Satisfying the criteria for qualifying income
Selection standard amount
– Single household: KRW 1,800,000 or less – Couple household: KRW 2,880,000 or less
For reference, if you or your spouse are recipients of occupational pension, you are not eligible. For the basic pension by type, see the table below.
The basic old-age pension changes slightly every year to reflect the inflation rate, and the calculated standard pension amount is maintained from January to December every year.
The benefit amount paid from January 2022 to December 2022 is up to KRW 307,500 per month for single households and up to KRW 492,000 per month for married couple households.
In order to apply for the Basic Old-age Pension, you become eligible for the Basic Old-age Pension from one month before the month in which your birth date falls in the year you turn 65, the age at which you can receive the Basic Old-age Pension.
For example, if your birthday is on November 3, 2022, you can apply for payments from October 22. Please note that the payment amount can be received immediately from the date of application.
You can apply for the basic old-age pension by visiting the Administrative Welfare Center or the National Pension Service in your address, or on the Welfare Road website.
Even if you are not the person in charge, your child can apply for the old-age pension for married couples instead of you, and the government provides a direct service for the elderly with mobility difficulties.
You can easily self-diagnose your Basic Old-age Pension at ‘Welfare > Welfare Service > Simulated Calculation > Basic Pension’.
However, as the diagnosis results are simulated, there may be a difference from the actual eligibility for benefits. Therefore, please use it as a reference only and call the Health and Welfare Counseling Center at 129 for accurate information.

The basic pension refers to a system that provides a certain amount of support to those who do not receive the national pension or who receive a small amount even if they receive it.
